Dear aaa,
A heartbreaking tragedy struck LIONSROCK Big Cat Sanctuary. Our beloved lioness Vasylyna, rescued from Ukraine, passed away suddenly, leaving our entire team devastated.
Vasylyna’s life was difficult and far too short, yet for more than three years she experienced safety, compassion, and care – a living testament to why rescuing big cats matters so deeply. |
Found in a war-torn region
In August 2022, Vasylyna was discovered wandering alone on the streets of the Kharkiv region after escaping private keeping. With the war raging so close, she faced unimaginable stress and danger. Her frail body told a sombre story – underweight and in poor health.
Ukrainian rescue centre Wild Animal Rescue gave her temporary shelter until a permanent solution could be found. That’s when we stepped in. Vasylyna was transferred to FELIDA Big Cat Sanctuary, where she finally received the specialised care she so desperately needed. |
Vasylyna’s recovery was slow but steady.
At FELIDA, Vasylyna found refuge and something even more precious: companionship. She bonded with Nikola, another young lion rescued from Montenegro. Their connection blossomed naturally through play, mutual grooming, and shared moments of trust.
After seven months together, in April 2024, they moved to LIONSROCK, where they could bask in the sun and live in species-appropriate conditions. Sadly, Vasylyna’s life ended too soon, leaving Nikola heartbroken. Today, Nikola is receiving special care from our behaviour consultant, who has created a daily plan to help him cope with the sudden loss of his beloved companion. |

Vasylyna’s resilience will never be forgotten.
Looking at Vasylyna, you would have never guessed the hardships she endured. Her playfulness and eagerness to embrace life were remarkable – made possible by the meticulous care of our teams. |
|
Despite her past, Vasylyna had nothing but trust towards people and was eager to experience life. We wanted nothing more than to give her a long and deserving life here in our sanctuary, but we must be grateful that she had the chance to experience it at all. All our big cats are a symbol of resilience, and we take solace knowing that she had not only overcome her past but was thriving in her new home.

LIONSROCK Big Cat Sanctuary is home to rescued big cats from around the world, where they can live free from fear and suffering. Each of them has a unique story, and most have travelled long, difficult journeys to find their forever home here.
Please, if you can, help us to commemorate Vasylyna’s life with a gift today. Your donation will help us continue giving abused big cats a second chance in South Africa. |
Though her time with us was sadly short, Vasylyna’s memory will live on in the work we do to create a better future for all big cats in need.
Rest in peace, Vasylyna.
