This is the time of year when everyone has a certain song constantly playing in their heads: Billy Crystal crooning, “It’s a wonderful night for Oscar! Oscar, Oscar!” Just me? Well, in any case, it was a wonderful morning for Oscar, as the Academy Awards revealed the nominations for this year’s ceremony—the august organization’s 98th annual celebration of film. The headline is that Ryan Coogler’s Sinners shattered the record for most nominations for a single film, getting 16 nods. Does this mean Sinners has just overtaken One Battle After Another for the official title of best-picture front-runner? You’ll have to wait till the show on March 15 to know for sure. Billy Crystal would want that for all of us.
Elsewhere, Chris Murphy runs down the other Oscar records that got broken this morning, the VF team notes where to stream all the movies (and which ones you can still watch in an actual, real-deal movie theater), and John Ross and Rebecca Ford pour one out for Wicked: For Good, which received not a single Oscar nod today. More tomorrow! |
