The nominations for the 98th annual Oscars arrived this morning, pitting Sinners, with a record 16 nods, against One Battle After Another, which earned 13. And while the nominations mostly felt like a breath of fresh air after an angsty year for Hollywood, there were some surprises and snubs. Here’s film critic Barry Hertz with his take on the nominations.

Also this week, we caught up with Hollywood icon Jodie Foster, who candidly spoke to the Globe about life at 60 and the wisdom she’s earned along the way. Foster, who stars in new French dramedy A Private Life, in theatres this weekend, is decidedly in a good place in her life: “I feel a freedom I never had.” Read more.
