My dear. friend Elliot Williams joined me to discuss his first book, Five Bullets, the story of the Bernie Goetz New York City subway attack in 1984. I love this book, which is partially about the prosecution of Bernie Goetz for attacking four young Black men he felt threatened by, because I discuss the case with my students. It’s complicated and Elliot unstintingly teases all of that out, with a real knack for storytelling. If you joined our live conversation, you know he also uses the past to make compelling points about the present. He traces the rise of Rupert Murdoch at the New York Post, which has strong echoes today. If you missed us live, I hope you’ll find time to listen to Elliot’s fascinating discussion of the past and what we can learn from it about the present moment.
