Dear Mother Jones Reader,
“Immediate conservation needed for birds that have experienced the steepest population losses.” That’s how the 2025 State of the Birds report characterized the situation facing 112 birds who have lost more than half of their populations in the last 50 years. Out of these, the Rufous Hummingbird and 36 other species are categorized as Orange Alert Tipping Point Species—having experienced long-term population losses and accelerated declines within the past decade. At a time when one-third of U.S. bird species need conservation action, we must urgently flock together for their protection.
That’s where we come in. The National Audubon Society has more than a century of conservation expertise under our wing, and our science powers the best path forward to help more birds survive at this critical time. We know what it takes to protect birds and their habitats, and we need your support.
Start an annual gift by January 31 to help bring vulnerable birds like the Rufous Hummingbird back from the brink and receive the spring issue of Audubon’s quarterly magazine. |
The latest State of the Birds report should be a wake-up call for the disastrous impacts that climate change and habitat destruction have had on bird populations. But because birds have been telling us for quite some time that we must act—and because we have listened—we’re already protecting vulnerable birds in every landscape where we work. Using our proven combination of research, advocacy, and hands-on conservation action to maintain and protect resilient landscapes across the nation, we are pushing for the large-scale change it will take to ease habitat loss and help reverse the climbing temperatures of the climate crisis.
Birds are at a crisis tipping point—and our best efforts to bring them back depend on you. Start your annual donation to provide protection for birds and get Audubon’s exclusive, award-winning magazine for years to come!
Sincerely,
National Audubon Society |
