Have you ever felt guilty when editing a wedding video? Worried that the video isn’t long enough? Stressing about not including a moment from the ceremony? I used to feel that way. I would include every line of the vows in my edits. Every single bridesmaid walking down the aisle. Even the cringiest of toasts played through in their entirety. My thinking was, "What if the couple asks about that moment?" What if they notice I cut out a line? What if they ask why their second cousin wasn't shown on the dance floor? In short, I was editing scared. Scared of an angry email. Scared of a bad review. Scared that they wouldn't like the way I edited their film. But let me tell you the truth that took me way too long to realize: By including every single moment from a wedding day in your edits, you are actually doing your couples a disservice. And you are killing your own creativity. See, a couple isn’t hiring you just to capture their wedding day, they are hiring you for your creative vision. They don’t just want to re-live their wedding day, they want to re-live their wedding day as you, the filmmaker, saw it. They didn't hire you by accident. They hired you because they saw your work and loved how it looked and how it made them feel. And they wanted to feel the same thing when they watched their own wedding film. That's your style! And it's shown by telling a story with moments that you choose, not by showing every second of the wedding day. It’s up to you as a filmmaker and editor to discover that story and deliver the couple a film that they will love. So quit editing from a place of fear. Use your creativity and talent to tell the best story that you possibly can from a wedding, and never apologize for that creativity. If that resonates with you... If you want to discover more of your own creative voice... We aren't done yet. Because learning how to apply that creativity in the edit is what allows you to tell better stories consistently. And that's something you owe to yourself and to your business. That's just a fraction of what I teach inside my flagship wedding film editing course, Wedding Film Framework: DaVinci Resolve.
