Good afternoon. It's Tuesday, Jan. 27.

In today's newsletter:

  • Elements of Gov. Mike Dunleavy's long-awaited fiscal plan were formally introduced in the Legislature, including a proposed statewide sales tax.

  • The Anchorage School District announced early closures for all schools except Girdwood as road conditions deteriorate amid heavy snow. The National Weather Service is calling for additional snow through Wednesday morning.

  • Sen. Lisa Murkowski doubled down on the need for congressional oversight of ICE, two days after federal agents killed a 37-year-old nurse in Minneapolis. Other members of Alaska's congressional delegation weighed in, too.

In the aftermath of WWII, American efforts to acquire Greenland ramped up, including a proposed swap that included oil-rich stretches of the North Slope. In his latest column, historian David Reamer recalls the time when America considered trading part of Alaska for Greenland.

Anchorage weather

It's snowy again today with a high near 19 degrees. The Anchorage area is under a winter storm warning through 9 p.m., with the National Weather Service calling for snow accumulations of 6-12 inches. Snow will continue into Wednesday morning, followed by a wintry mix of snow and freezing rain.

Here's what else is making headlines in Alaska today.

The plan calls for enshrining the Permanent Fund dividend in the state constitution; restricting state spending; and raising new revenue, primarily through a sales tax set at 4% for half the year and 2% for the other half.
