The Measured Mom

I admit that as a classroom teacher, my approach to comprehension planning was vague.

I knew comprehension mattered.
I knew students needed to understand what they read.

But I didn’t have a clear process for planning how that understanding would happen.

What I skipped for years was sitting down with the text itself and working through it carefully before instruction.

Not to match it to a strategy.

But to ask two very specific questions:

  1. What knowledge does this text build?
  2. Where will students need support to understand it?

In my newest YouTube video, I explain what to look for when you’re working through a text this way and how to plan for reading aloud or student reading with that lens in mind - and it includes an editable lesson plan template!

If comprehension planning has ever felt fuzzy or hard to pin down, this is the piece that was missing for me.

P.S. On Saturday, February 7, I’m hosting a live workshop called Building Comprehension from the Ground Up. This will be different from my typical webinars. It’s a smaller, more focused group, and the goal is very practical. You’ll walk away with specific tips and tools you can implement with your students on Monday. A replay and certificate of attendance are included. Click here to save your spot.
