I admit that as a classroom teacher, my approach to comprehension planning was vague.
I knew comprehension mattered. I knew students needed to understand what they read.
But I didn’t have a clear process for planning how that understanding would happen.
What I skipped for years was sitting down with the text itself and working through it carefully before instruction.
Not to match it to a strategy.
But to ask two very specific questions:
What knowledge does this text build?
Where will students need support to understand it?
