| Good morning. The debate over immigration enforcement rages on, and Tribune Opinion offers two sharply contrasting viewpoints today. From the right, Republican state Rep. Norine Hammond argues for repealing sanctuary state laws that bar what in her view are commonsense avenues for cooperation between federal immigration enforcement and state and local law enforcement targeting immigrants in the country illegally who have committed crimes. From the left, Lake County State's Attorney Eric Rinehart argues that federal immigration agents can and should be held accountable in breaking state laws barring excessive force. The editorial board says there should be no ifs, ands or buts. Chicago ought to vie for the 2028 Democratic National Convention, and there's no need for state and local leaders to wring their hands over the potential for future issues with a Trump-led FBI and Secret Service. In a second editorial, business leaders both in Chicago and Minneapolis have decried the hyperaggressive tactics of ICE and the Border Patrol. We approve, but note that businesses aren't obligated to opine on issues of the day, even in this chaotic environment. Finally, regular contributor Willie Wilson wonders when Illinois voters will hold accountable the veteran politicians who have presided over fiscal and educational failures in our state. We've got readers' letters too, of course, which we always appreciate. Stay warm, and we'll be back again tomorrow. — Steve Daniels, editorial board member Submit an op-ed | Submit a letter to the editor | Meet the Tribune Editorial Board | Subscribe to this newsletter |
