Happy Friday!

What a week it has been! We hope all of our CES families stayed safe and warm during the recent snow and ice. Seeing your snow day pictures was a highlight of our week! From sledding to snowmen, it’s clear everyone had a fantastic time enjoying the weather!

It’s hard to believe we’ve already reached the midpoint of the school year. As Quarter 2 comes to a close, we want to share how incredibly proud we are of our students’ growth. We’re eager to carry this momentum into a successful second half of the year! Additionally, due to the snow, progress reports will now be sent home in your child's communicator on Friday, February 13th. Parents can see grades in SIS ParentVUE beginning Monday, February 9th.

Finally, our Afternoon Tea with Administration has been rescheduled to February 25th at 2:30pm. Please stop by the library to check in with the Principal and Assistant Principals on February 25th from 2:30-4:00 (stop by any time during this window) in the CES library. We want to hear your feedback, answer questions, or just catch up on how the year is going for your family. Please note this is an Early Release Wednesday.

Healthy Habits to Reduce the Spread of Flu and Other Germs

Fairfax County is seeing very high levels of influenza (flu) illness. Visits to emergency departments and urgent care centers for flu-like illness have increased, especially among children, and multiple flu outbreaks have occurred in our community and school settings.

Consider these tips from the Fairfax County Health Department to help reduce the spread of flu and other germs.

Kindergarten Registration

Kindergarten helps children learn and practice the social, emotional, problem-solving, and self-regulation skills they will use throughout their lives.

Fairfax County public schools typically conduct kindergarten registration events, including orientation, in the spring. Eligible children can be registered throughout the summer, but registering your child early helps schools prepare and ensure they have the teachers and resources needed on the first day of school.

If your child will attend our school, please gather necessary documents and complete registration forms as soon as possible.

FCPS offers support and resources for all families to help with registration and the transition to kindergarten. For support in other languages, please visit the FCPS Registration webpage.

Immunization Events for FCPS Students

FCPS, in partnership with Inspire Health Alliance, will provide school-required immunizations and optional flu shots for all FCPS students with no out-of-pocket costs. Multiple events will take place at designated FCPS locations. Additional dates will be available throughout the school year.

Parents or guardians may view upcoming events and schedule an appointment for their student. Participation is voluntary. View immunization resources on the FCPS website.

Did Your Student Get a New Phone or Device?

For a distraction-free start to the New Year, please remind your student about FCPS' policy for cell phones and personal devices. This policy helps students focus, interact more with their peers and teachers, and build independent problem-solving skills.

Exceptions for students with medical conditions or IEP/504 plans.

Cell phone use on buses and field trips.

This year, our front display case will incorporate a collaborative approach between CES teachers and families. We will use the FCPS recognized heritage and celebration months. Families and CES staff are invited to share books, artifacts, pictures, etc. for each month.

Windows represent the opportunities we have to learn about different cultures, abilities and backgrounds. Mirrors represent children feeling valued and gives them a sense of belonging which can help validate their own experiences and identities. Doors represent experiencing another life and promotes empathy.

Winter weather will be here before you know it! Watch this video to see how weather closing decisions are made at FCPS.

FCPS’ website is generally the first place to find out about emergency weather closings. Other communication channels will be used as quickly as possible, including email, text, social media, the new FCPS mobile app, and news stations. Learn more about how schedule changes are communicated.

Be sure to plan for the winter season. Update your contact information in SIS ParentVUE, bookmark the FCPS website, and arrange emergency child care if needed.
