Cherry Run News January 29

Dear Cherry Run Families,

We hope this message finds you and your loved ones safe and warm. Following this week’s significant winter storm, our campus has been transformed into a winter wonderland (see the photo from Monday below!).

While the snow is beautiful, it requires a monumental effort to manage. We want to extend our deepest gratitude to the incredible CRES custodial crew. They have worked tirelessly to clear snow and ice from our parking lots, sidewalks, and entryways to ensure a safe return for our students and staff.

As we transition back to our school routine next week, please review these important updates:

  • Safe Travels: Please allow for extra time during drop-off and pick-up next week. Drive slowly in school zones and parking lots. While main roads are clear, many side streets and sidewalks remain slick or are obstructed by snowbanks. If your student usually walks, we encourage you to use the CRES Kiss 'n Ride to ensure a safe arrival and dismissal while these conditions are still present.

  • Winter Gear: With temperatures expected to hover near or below freezing next week, please ensure your child is dressed in appropriate layers for arrival and dismissal.

We are looking forward to seeing all our Cardinals back in the hallways next week!

Sincerely,

Maura Donahue and Miranda Goss

Kindergarten Registration

It’s Kindergarten Registration Time!

Kindergarten helps children learn and practice the social, emotional, problem-solving, and self-regulation skills they will use throughout their lives.

Fairfax County public schools typically conduct kindergarten registration events, including orientation, in the spring. Eligible children can be registered throughout the summer, but registering your child early helps schools prepare and ensure they have the teachers and resources needed on the first day of school.

If your child will attend our school, please gather necessary documents and complete registration forms as soon as possible.

FCPS offers support and resources for all families to help with registration and the transition to kindergarten. For support in other languages, please visit the FCPS Registration webpage

Dual Language Immersion

The online, countywide lottery is open to Fairfax County residents. Families must have a SIS ParentVUE account. Students not currently enrolled in FCPS should register at their base school before applying for the immersion program

  • Families applying for first grade must do so by Thursday, February 12, at 4 p.m.
  • Those applying for Kindergarten must do so by Monday, March 2, at 4 p.m.

Informational meetings will begin in January. View dates and details on the FCPS calendar. If you have questions, please contact Brigid Williams at 571-423-4600.

Meal Kits

Meal Kits Available for Students

In an effort to support students who may be experiencing food insecurity while our schools are closed during planned student holidays, Fairfax County Public Schools Food and Nutrition Services (FNS) is providing meal kits at specific schools for students. Meal kits will be available from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Friday, January 30.

Children do not need to be present to pick up the kits, which will contain a meal and a healthy snack. No proof of eligibility or identification is required. View pickup locations for meal kits.
