In a vote last night, Democrats successfully held off more funding for ICE, for now. Calls to representatives by thousands of citizens helped. Now the Senate has to deal with the potential government shutdown tonight at midnight. Minority Leader Chuck Schumer was blunt: “Republicans need to get their act together.” Would diner food help? The above drawing is something I did during my live-drawing video yesterday. I had lunch yesterday with a friend at a diner; this was my brain and hand recreating the feeling of a diner. The only real-ish thing from my experience yesterday was that the woman talking in this cartoon is eating French toast. Yesterday, a man sitting nearby was eating French toast— I love when people order decadent food like that at 2 in the afternoon. Today’s Deeper Seeing, a regular feature for paid subscribers, contains on the importance of cartoons during times like these. I’m excited to also share my first-ever paid published piece. Cartoons have long provided an outlet for artists, the media and the public to cope with and understand the biggest events in the world dating back to the 1800’s, and then certainly in 1925 when The New Yorker first began publishing humor drawings, and became synonymous with the form.
