Good afternoon Cedar Lane Community,
It has been quite some time since we’ve been together in the building! We hope everyone has stayed safe and warm during this extended period of snow and ice. Because the winter weather has been so impactful lately, we want to re-emphasize the Winter Resources and Weather Closing information found later in this newsletter. Whether you need assistance with cold-weather clothing, food resources, or simply want to know the fastest way to check for school delays and closings (don’t forget to check the FCPS website or the new mobile app!), we have compiled everything in one place to support our families during these freezing temperatures.
With all the time we've had away from school, we know the "end of the quarter" feels a bit different this year! Now that we are finally transitioning into the second half of the school year, we want to encourage our students to reconnect with their teachers and stay on top of any final requirements. Our goal is to ensure a smooth start to the new quarter for every student, despite the interruptions the weather has provided. We are so proud of the resilience our Cedar Lane community has shown, and we can’t wait to get back to our regular routines together!
With hopes for a clear and steady week ahead,
The Staff of Cedar Lane School

Winter Resources for Families
A list of resources has been compiled for students and families in case they or someone they know needs assistance while schools are closed for winter weather. Please visit FCPS’ winter resources page for information on academic support, mental health support, and county resources related to food, clothing, housing, and other needs.
Even If School Is Closed, Learning Can Continue!
We encourage students to take advantage of fun learning opportunities during snow or inclement weather days. Consider these winter activities to blend education and play at home.

Our school will participate in the FCPS Student Experience Survey. This survey will gather important feedback from students about their school experiences to help FCPS make meaningful improvements.
All students in grades 6-12, except those who have opted out, will receive a link to the survey in their FCPS email on February 23. We will administer the survey during the school day between Monday, February 23, and Friday, March 6. Any student may take the survey at home, if they are unable to take the survey during the school day. You will receive a communication with details on how to preview the survey and opt your child out, if you choose. The electronic opt-out form can also be accessed at this link.
We believe it's important to hear from our students about what we're doing well and where we can improve. This work also aligns with the equity commitments in FCPS’ 2023-30 Strategic Plan, which include a focus on amplifying student voice and experiences as we work toward meeting plan goals.
 ❄️ Prepare for Winter Weather
Winter weather will be here before you know it! Watch this video to see how weather closing decisions are made at FCPS.
FCPS’ website is generally the first place to find out about emergency weather closings. Other communication channels will be used as quickly as possible, including email, text, social media, the new FCPS mobile app, and news stations. Learn more about how schedule changes are communicated.
Be sure to plan for the winter season. Update your contact information in SIS ParentVUE, bookmark the FCPS website, and arrange emergency child care if needed.
⛄ Keep Your Child Warm During Outdoor Activities
We will monitor the weather for low temperatures, wind chill advisories and warnings, and weather advisories that may prevent children from being outside. Make sure your child is dressed appropriately with a warm coat and other cold-weather clothing, so they can comfortably enjoy their time outdoors. View the National Weather Service’s tips on staying safe during cold weather.
