Dear readers, By our count, there are nearly as many books to watch for next month as days in February itself: 27, to be precise, and I’m willing to bet you’ll find at least one that beckons. In case you missed it, our critic Jennifer Szalai wrote about two recent books that take up the subject of mattering and why humans have such a primal urge to feel valued. The books occasionally stretch to accommodate all manner of example or argument. But as Szalai writes: “They both provide something rather than nothing. In dark times, that’s a start.” Finally, today’s episode of the podcast features our Book Review Book Club discussion about Xenobe Purvis’s novel, “The Hounding.” I really loved this book — it was one of the more memorable stories I read last year without a doubt — and particularly enjoyed seeing all the reader comments about it. And we announced February’s Book Club pick: “Wuthering Heights,” by Emily Brontë, just in time for Valentine’s Day, and for the new film adaptation that is making me very, very nervous. See you next week. Like this email? We hope you’ve enjoyed this newsletter, which is made possible through subscriber support. Subscribe to The New York Times.
