Being an adult who didn’t know how to ride a bike became a bit of a joke about me. “Oh, that’s just Hannah,” friends and family would laugh. “Of course, she can’t. She’s so uncoordinated. I’m surprised she can even tie her shoelaces.” I would usually laugh along with them, acting as if I was in on the joke. After all, it’s better to be laughed with than laughed at. But no matter how thick I tried to make my skin, I found myself slowly using those words to fuel the already burning fire of self-loathing that was crackling inside me.
It might sound silly to some people that not being able to ride a bike would affect my self-esteem so much, but it was only one of the many things for which I berated myself regularly. It is often not one big thing but lots of smaller things that can weigh us down.
