The Measured Mom

Most students know that the goal of reading is to understand.

But knowing the goal and acting on it are two very different things.

I remember this clearly with my (now) 15-year-old son.

When he was in fourth grade, he had required summer reading (required by yours truly).

One day I asked him to tell me about what he’d just read.

He couldn’t.

Reading, for him, was something to check off the list so he could go play outside.

He was focused on getting through the pages, not stopping to notice whether they were actually making sense.

Many students don’t automatically monitor their comprehension just because they can read or because they know understanding matters.

Comprehension monitoring takes effort.

It requires slowing down.

And it has to be taught and reinforced.

In my upcoming workshop, Building Comprehension from the Ground Up, we’ll spend time unpacking what comprehension really involves and why it’s so complex. We’ll look closely at teaching strategies that help students connect the dots so that they're not just reading words but also making meaning.

The workshop is happening this Saturday, February 7, from 9 - 10:30 AM Central.

And today is the last day to register at the early bird price.

We are currently rebranding from The Measured Mom, which was our business name for 13 years. Because of that, you will still see themeasuredmom.com on many of our resources. We hope to complete the entire transition by the end of 2026.
