I’ve been wanting to go to Antarctica for as long as I can remember. Who wouldn’t want to visit a place nearly untouched by humans? This is where the conditions make the rules, leopard seals laze atop icebergs, humpback whales breach, and don’t get me started on the penguins (a word that Benedict Cumberbatch can't pronounce – start at the 4-minute mark, you’re welcome).
There were obstacles that kept me from making this dream trip a reality. The cost, the time requirement and the rough seas are all overwhelming, but if you can thread the needle and navigate with all three, you’re in business.
On my 10-day cruise, hosted by Silversea aboard the Silver Cloud, we sailed through otherworldly landscapes and unmatched beauty. It’s almost impossible to process, but even if your mind can’t absorb the magnificence, your heart can. Antarctica is a place that penetrates your soul. If you’re anything like me, it will make you cry.
Read on for highlights and impressions from my blessed trip. I wish everyone could see Antarctica, where the predominant feeling is gratitude for this wondrous planet.
