Today's Milan Cortina Olympics Headlines

Thursday, February 5

Alysa Liu, take a bow! But can you take home the gold? The 20-year-old free spirit is skating freely again and loving every minute of it. To me, women’s singles in figure skating is the most pressurized event of any competition at the Winter Olympics. But Liu doesn’t believe in pressure. I caught up with the two-time Olympian, who finished 6th in Beijing in 2022 but suddenly retired at the age of 16. Now, she’s back - and in a better place than ever. I can’t wait until this afternoon here in Italy, when the U.S. Women’s Hockey Team begins its quest to get to the top of the podium. They take on the Czech Republic. Team USA last won gold in 2018 but believes they have the right combination of veteran leadership and inspiring youth to do it again. Lindsey Vonn continues to hope she can make magic on Sunday in the women’s downhill. Ilya Malinin knows his performance will be enchanting in men’s figure skating. Snowboarder Chloe Kim dreams about making it three straight golds in the women’s halfpipe. Only 13 American athletes have earned a three-peat in the same event at the Winter Olympics. Hey, I got to get going. There are stories to tell everywhere. -Bruce

What are the new sports and events at the 2026 Milan Cortina Winter Olympics?

The Winter Olympics officially kick off on Feb. 6, 2026. While the grandeur, upsets and history-making moments will remain, the spectacle promises to be even more spectacular than ever with a series of new competitions, formats and the introduction of ski mountaineering.

Here’s what’s new at the Milan Cortina Games:

The last time a new discipline was introduced to the Winter Olympics, “American Idol” had just premiered. Skeleton debuted at the 2002 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City and for 24 years the status quo remained. Not anymore. Ski mountaineering will climb its way into competition at Milan Cortina 2026, with sprint and mixed relay events taking centerstage.

Who is Danny Casper? Men's curling captain from New York hopes to repeat team gold

The men’s curling team from the United States has only brought home the gold medal once before. Can this year’s team led by a New York native do it again?

Danny Casper, 24, leads the men’s team of curlers at the Milan Cortina Olympics, hungry to try and bring back gold for Team USA. John Shuster led the U.S. men to gold for the very first time by defeating Sweden at the 2018 Pyeongchang Games.

In order to punch his ticket to Italy, Casper and his team had to take down Team Shuster at the U.S. Olympic Curling Trials. Team Shuster has competed for the U.S. at the last five consecutive Olympic Games.

How to watch U.S. women's hockey at 2026 Olympics: TV, stream, schedule, more

Team USA women’s hockey is out for revenge.

The 2022 Beijing Olympics saw the U.S. fall 3-2 to rivals Canada in the gold medal game in its bid to repeat after a gold triumph in 2018.

Team USA has a strong roster for the competition, which includes Hilary Knight, Abbey Murphy, Lee Stecklein and more. Canada, though, will once again be in the mix to win it all for a repeat, so the U.S. will need to be wary of avoiding any slip-ups.
