Kicking off

We've hit the icing on the cake stage for the Patriots. The cherry on top portion of the postseason.

Win or lose in Super Bowl 60, the improbable and uplifting ride to Santa Clara will come to the end.

Will there be disappointment if they lose to the Seattle Seahawks? Absolutely.

But the Patriots have far exceeded expectations and planted the seed for many more competitive, and perhaps championship winning seasons in the near future.

That's about as good a silver lining as you can get looking at a team that won just four games the previous two seasons.

With Mike Vrabel and Drake Maye, they have the coach-quarterback nailed down. They have an elite coaching staff headlined by Josh McDaniels. And they have a roster with foundational pieces (Milton Williams, Christian Gonzalez, Will Campbell) in key spots, and players who fit Vrabel's vision and culture.

Beating the Seahawks Sunday would be an unexpected bonus. It would be the ultimate punctuation mark to put on a season that captured New England and beyond.

The Patriots aren't favored to win, but that hasn't meant much to Vrabel's outfit. They seem to thrive when the odds are stacked against them.

The cherry on top awaits.

MassLive sports columnist Karen Guregian predicts the winner of the Super Bowl

The Patriots have already survived and taken down three of the league's toughest defenses during the playoffs: Chargers, Texans, Broncos.

Now comes the fourth.

The Seahawks allowed the fewest points per game (17.2) in 2025. They are an insanely good unit.

I think Drake Maye, liberated from the cold, snow, and tough weather conditions from recent playoff games, will have a good game, even against that defense.

He says the shoulder injury he suffered is in the rearview mirror. I'm going to take him at face value on that.

And, I suspect the Patriots defense will conjure up a few more ghosts for Sam Darnold.

Bottom line: This is more a gut feeling, than anything else. The Seahawks are the better team on paper, but that really hasn't factored into anything when it comes to the Patriots chances to win or lose during the season.

The Patriots exude intangibles, and that can be a great equalizer when you lose on the talent scoreboard.

Final score prediction: Patriots 24, Seahawks 21

Patriots Question of the Week

Here is this week's highlighted question:

How many interceptions will Sam Darnold throw in the Super Bowl? - Mason from Attleboro

Guregian: Well, six seasons ago, in his second year with the New York Jets, Darnold threw four interceptions and lost a fumble in a 33-0 loss to the Patriots in a primetime game at MetLife Stadium.

As you're probably alluding to, that's the game where he infamously saw ghosts, he was so confounded by the Patriots defense.

A lot of time has passed, and Darnold has improved as a quarterback since then. But I do think he's prone to mistakes if pressured. He led the league with 20 turnovers (14 picks, 6 fumbles) this season.

He didn't throw a pick in the NFC Championship win over the Rams. I'm going to put him at two for the Super Bowl.
