Today's Milan Cortina Olympics Headlines

Monday, February 9

It was a day like no other at the Winter Olympics. It started with tears and ended with cheers. In between, there were moments to wonder what might have been. In the women’s downhill, Lindsey Vonn’s fifth and final Olympics ended after just 13 seconds. The 2010 gold medalist clipped a gate and careened down the course before coming to an earth-shattering stop on her back. The 41-year-old was immediately airlifted off the course and later underwent surgery to repair a broken left leg. I watched the entire thing unfold. The horrifying crash cast a pall over the remainder of the competition and overshadowed teammate Breezy Johnson’s terrific gold medal performance, the first for Team USA at the Milan-Cortina Games. In figure skating, it all came down to the U.S. and Japan for gold - and Ilia Malinin turned in a clutch performance in the men's free skate. The Quad God's performance wasn’t perfect, but he did plenty of what no one else can do as he pushed the limit in an extraordinary display of power and precision. Malinin led Team USA to gold, as America became the first nation to repeat in the team figure skating event. This is what the Olympics are all about - a range of emotions that go from euphoria to heartbreak. Yes, we saw it all today in Milan and Cortina. And remember, that was only Day 2. -Bruce

A look at the moments leading up to Lindsey Vonn's crash in downhill event

Lindsey Vonn‘s Olympic comeback came to an abrupt — and heartbreaking — finish.

The legendary Team USA alpine skier broke her left leg Sunday after crashing in the women’s downhill event at the 2026 Milan Cortina Games. The 41-year-old was competing despite tearing her ACL in the same leg just over a week prior in a World Cup race.

Photographs taken by Jacquelyn Martin of The Associated Press capture Vonn’s right ski pole hitting the fourth gate as she went airborne off of a jump just seconds into her run. The contact appeared to throw Vonn off-balance, twisting her body sideways mid-air before she crashed hard into the course at the Tofane Alpine Skiing Centre in Cortina d’Ampezzo.

Ilia Malinin, Amber Glenn lead Team USA to back-to-back gold in nail-biting finish

Ilia Malinin beat Japanese rival Shun Sato in a head-to-head showdown at the Milan Cortina Olympics on Sunday night, helping the U.S. defend its team figure skating gold medal by breaking a deadlock with Japan in the final session of the competition.

The 21-year-old nicknamed the “Quad God” landed five quadruple jumps and scored 200.03 points for his free skate, atoning for his mediocre short program — at least by his lofty standards — one night earlier. Sato followed him with three quads in his program, but he could only manage 194.86 points, leaving the Japanese with a second straight silver medal in the team event.

The U.S. ended up on 69 points while Japan finished with 68. Matteo Rizzo delivered one of the best free skates of his career as Italy was trying to hold onto the bronze medal, allowing the host nation to finish third with 60 points.

Are backflips allowed in figure skating? Why everyone is talking about Surya Bonaly

U.S. figure skater and gold-medal favorite Ilia Malinin stunned fans when he delivered a backflip during the men’s short program of the team competition on Saturday.

The 21-year-old from Virginia came up short of expectations, however, when he scored below 100 points and came in second behind Japan’s Yuma Kagiyama. The score narrowed the gap between the two countries, setting up a nail-biting conclusion Sunday to the team competition.

Malinin became the first Olympian to successfully land the trick in almost 30 years.

WATCH: Lindsey Vonn crashes out in women's downhill

Lindsey Vonn, racing on a badly injured left knee, crashed early in the Olympic downhill Sunday and was taken off the course in a helicopter after the 41-year-old American received medical attention for several minutes.

Vonn had said medaling in the women’s downhill Sunday would “be the best comeback I’ve done so far,” and she appeared noticeably upset after the crash. Fans were, too. Watch her crash in the downhill competition above.

Vonn had one more scheduled race ahead of her — the super-G on Thursday. Sunday’s crash may end her 2026 Olympic dream. If you missed he
