Not like the rest of The Rock: Staten Island's redistricting fight centers on North Shore

It's Monday in New York City, where Staten Island's North Shore, like the rest of the borough, is currently represented by Rep. Nicole Malliotakis, the only Republican in the city's congressional delegation.

But the North Shore — a dense, diverse, walkable area that swung for Mayor Zohran Mamdani in 2025 — arguably has more in common with Lower Manhattan than the rest of Staten Island.

And if the plaintiffs in a redistricting lawsuit get their way, Staten Island and Lower Manhattan will soon share a congressional district.

As the case winds its way through the courts, we asked North Shore locals what differentiates their neighborhoods.

Here's what else is happening:

• New York City medical examiners are investigating the causes of death for three men found in separate locations over the weekend, including one on the roof of a Brooklyn building and two on different subway trains.
• When New Yorkers finally emerge from the freakish cold of recent weeks, they’ll face another shock: considerably higher utility bills.
