Montreal Mayor Soraya Martinez Ferrada and Quebec Premier François Legault made their bid Friday for the city to become the host of a proposed international defence bank that would bolster the ability of NATO countries to increase their military spending.
It would create an estimated 3,500 jobs and could generate economic spinoffs for the local economy of more than $600 million.
Some questioned, however, whether Montreal’s eligibility is at risk because the Parti Québécois has promised to launch another referendum on Quebec’s separation if elected, writes The Gazette's René Bruemmer.
