It was a shocking outcome in men’s figure skating Friday, as heavily favored U.S. skater Ilia Malinin — better known as the “Quad God” for his repertoire of 4-rotation jumps — found himself off the podium after falling twice during his long program. Malinin, a 21 year old from Virginia, told reporters he was “speechless” after the event.
But one athlete’s upset is another’s underdog story: Kazakhstan’s Mikhail Shaidorov took home the gold medal, which is the country’s first gold of this games, and only its second gold medal won at a Winter Olympics ever. |
