Is there such a thing as a perfect pillow?

Six memory foam pillows are stacked on an orange surface, with three on the left and three on the right. Each stack is adorned with small, delicate teacups and glasses of water or pink glassware, giving the pillows a staged, high-tea appearance.

Shaena is a writer on the sleep team. She currently has 30 different pillows in her bedroom.

I’ve spent the last six months sleeping on a different pillow every week — sometimes even every night — to find The One that I think will give most people the best night’s rest. At the center of that quest is an unavoidable tension: Pillows are deeply personal.

But what if there was such a thing as a magic pillow genie? You share your ideal pillow specs (wishes, dare I say), and poof: Out pops a perfect, one-of-a-kind pillow. Pluto Pillow is an attempt at that.

The process is fairly simple: You answer a short quiz, and less than two weeks later, your custom pillow arrives at your door. I clicked along, entering in my height, weight, sleep position, and stats about my current pillow. It even asked about adjectives that sound appealing when describing a pillow — I chose the (admittedly vague) “settled and supportive.” I hit submit, then patiently waited for my box to arrive.

When it came a week later, my white-and-blue pillow was fairly fat and firm, what I had wanted as a side-sleeper, and my neck felt like it was in good alignment as I drifted off to sleep. Thankfully, I didn’t wake up with any pain or stiffness — my number one sign of good support. I liked my bespoke pillow, which means I must have a good handle on what I want.

But I’m also a sleep expert — of course I know what I’m looking for. Some of my colleagues were less sold. One stomach-sleeper called hers “floppy and flimsy.” Another called theirs “supportive and cushiony.”

Which is all to say: A magic pillow genie is probably still too good to be true. It can be hard to know even where to start looking for pillows — and every search requires some trial and error. The onus, ultimately, is still on the sleeper. (Sorry.)

Our advice? Figure out how you like to sleep, and then let us help: We’ve tested more than 100 pillows over the years, and we’ve broken our winners down by what you need, no custom poofing required. Good luck out there.

Gone Silk Pillowcase
Gone

These hand-dyed silk pillowcases feel wonderful: soft, cool, and opulent on both hair and skin. What’s more, they look like little abstract masterpieces on the bed. Head of newsletters Sofia Sokolove swears by her rich sunshine-yellow ones, but they come in everything from lovely muted pinks to a deep indigo.
