Chicago Tribune Opinion

Wednesday, February 18, 2026

Good morning, Chicago.

Data centers are popping up across the country, including in Illinois. These large facilities are pitched as necessary to help power new advances in AI technology. Readers in letters to the editor are concerned about the impact AI and data centers will have on communities. One writer, Harry Hofherr, urges public officials to “tap the brakes” on changing state laws to be more friendly to data center companies.

Also today, Lori Lightfoot reflects on her relationship with the Rev. Jesse Jackson. “The Rev. Jackson was our public conscience, not allowing anyone, particularly not the high and the mighty, to look away from the suffering of masses of people here and abroad who desperately needed the advocate he became,” the former mayor writes.

The Tribune Editorial Board continues its endorsements with its picks for Cook County Board and the Metropolitan Water Reclamation District. Read more about why this seemingly innocuous governing body, or the MWRD, is important below.

Thanks for reading. We will be back tomorrow.
