Good afternoon Cedar Lane Community!!
As we continue our journey through Black History Month, this week we highlight the remarkable life of Dr. Mary McLeod Bethune. Born the daughter of formerly enslaved parents, Bethune understood that education was the primary tool for liberation. In 1904, she opened a school for girls in Florida with just five students and very few resources; that small school grew into what is now Bethune-Cookman University! Sometimes known as "The First Lady of the Struggle," she was a trusted advisor to five U.S. Presidents including FDR, Harry Truman, and Dwight D. Eisenhower. As Dr. Bethune famously said, "Believe in yourself, learn, and never stop wanting to build a better world."
With this sentiment in mind, we are thrilled to see our students engaging with history and culture firsthand this month! Today, the students had a fantastic time attending a presentation of Les Ballets Africains at the George Mason University Center for the Arts. They were able to experience the vibrant music, dance, and storytelling of the Republic of Guinea’s cultural ambassadors—a truly powerful demonstration of African heritage and artistry.
The learning continues next week as the students will have an opportunity to explore the National Museum of African American History and Culture in Washington, D.C. on Friday, February 27. If your student is planning to attend the museum trip next Friday, please ensure that their permission slip is turned in as soon as possible. Thank you for supporting these opportunities that allow our students to see the history we study in class reflected in the world around them.
In the spirit of learning and legacy,
The Staff of Cedar Lane School

Our school will participate in the FCPS Student Experience Survey. This survey will gather important feedback from students about their school experiences to help FCPS make meaningful improvements.
All students in grades 6-12, except those who have opted out, will receive a link to the survey in their FCPS email on February 23. We will administer the survey during the school day between Monday, February 23, and Friday, March 6. Any student may take the survey at home, if they are unable to take the survey during the school day. You will receive a communication with details on how to preview the survey and opt your child out, if you choose. The electronic opt-out form can also be accessed at this link.
We believe it's important to hear from our students about what we're doing well and where we can improve. This work also aligns with the equity commitments in FCPS’ 2023-30 Strategic Plan, which include a focus on amplifying student voice and experiences as we work toward meeting plan goals.
Join us on February 25th at 7 pm for an informative presentation led by Michael McNulty, Substance Abuse Prevention Specialist with FCPS’s Substance Prevention (SAP) Program. This session is designed to empower parents with the knowledge, tools, & confidence to navigate one of the most challenging—and important—conversations families face. Learn the SAPS role in the school, warning signs, how to communicate with their student and how to support their student.
This hybrid meeting offers both in-person and virtual attendance options. RSVP to Ms. Min at jmmin1@fcps.edu or 703-608-3936.
Cedar Lane yearbooks are now on sale! $35 for 72 pages of full color fun! We do our best to include everyone in the yearbook.
Orders can be placed by using the QR code or sending a check made out to Cedar Lane School for $35 to the front office. See Ms. Blakemore if you have questions.

New Visitor Management System
We are excited to announce that our school is now using the new Raptor Visitor Management System (VMS). This upgrade is part of our school’s and FCPS’ ongoing commitment to enhancing school safety and streamlining the process for visitors at our school. The VMS ensures that no visitor is on the sex offender registry.
For most visitors, the user experience will be the same when you check-in at the front office.
But now there is also an app, which can make check-in’s even faster at school. Visitors who choose to download the RaptorSafe App and create a Raptor Passport can pre-verify their information before they get to school. The app will give you a QR code you can use when you check-in at school.
If you have questions or need assistance with the new system, please contact our front office. Thank you for your partnership in keeping our schools safe!
