Principal's Message

Greetings Tiger Families!

As the world turns its eyes toward the incredible feats of athleticism and spirit at the Winter Olympic Games over the past two weeks, it’s hard not to feel inspired. Whether it’s a downhill skier navigating a steep slope or a figure skater landing a triple axel, we see the same values on display in Milan and Cortina that we strive to cultivate right here at Twain Middle School.

The connection between the podium and the classroom is closer than you might think! Our students are "going for the gold" in their daily studies:

  • Perseverance: Just as an elite speed skater trains for years to shave a second off their time, our students show grit when they tackle a difficult math problem or rewrite a challenging essay.
  • Precision and Practice: Excellence isn't an accident. It’s the result of showing up every day, doing the "drills" (like homework and vocabulary lessons), and learning from every mistake.
  • Global Citizenship: The Olympics remind us that we are part of a massive, diverse world. As an International Baccalaureate Middle Years Program school, our students are learning to communicate and collaborate across cultures, just like the athletes in the Olympic Village.
  • Resilience: In snowboarding, a fall isn't the end—it's a chance to get back up. We encourage our students to view a disappointing grade, or a frustrating assignment not as a defeat, but as an opportunity to reflect on our learning and improve next time.

We are so proud of the dedication our Tigers show every day. Let’s use the energy of these Olympics to fuel our focus as we head navigate the downward slope of this school year. Whether in the hockey rink or the science lab, the path to success is paved with hard work and a positive attitude.

Go Tigers!

Matt

New Visitor Management System

We are excited to announce that Twain is now using the new Raptor Visitor Management System (VMS). This upgrade is part of our school’s and FCPS’ ongoing commitment to enhancing school safety and streamlining the process for visitors at our school. The VMS ensures that no visitor is on the sex offender registry.

For most visitors, the user experience will be the same when you check in at the front office.

But now there is also an app, which can make check-ins even faster at school. Visitors who choose to download the RaptorSafe App and create a Raptor Passport can pre-verify their information before they get to school. The app will give you a QR code you can use when you check in at school.

If you have questions or need assistance with the new system, please contact our front office. Thank you for your partnership in keeping our schools safe!

February 23rd through 27th is Public Schools Week

Twain welcomes every child, regardless of ability, race, religion, wealth, language, country of origin or needs. Our diversity is our strength. We are #PublicSchoolProud for Public Schools Week - an annual celebration that brings together school leaders, educators, parents & community leaders to recognize the importance of our nation’s public schools. Thank you for trusting in your public school system and allowing us the privilege of educating your Twain Tigers!

VSBA School Board Appreciation Month

Thank you to the Fairfax County School Board for all they do throughout the year. Specifically, thank you Marcia St.John-Cunning (Franconia District) and Mateo Dunne (Mt. Vernon District) for your support as our magisterial members supporting Twain! Want to contact your school board representatives to share your appreciation? Visit their website to find your school board member and contact them.

National Junior Honor Society (NJHS) Applications are now open; Due Friday, Feb 27

Hello Parents & Students!

Applications for National Junior Honor Society are now open and available in the All-School Schoology Course. Only students can access the application and fill it out, but please help your student if they need help filling out the application. Applications will be due on Fri. Feb. 27th.

We held an online interest meeting on Fri. Jan. 30th. Below are links to the recording of that meeting and the slides presented. We hope that this can help you get the answers that you need.

In the application it does ask students if they have completed service. If your student is unsure about service performed here are some ideas: Service given through

  • Scouts
  • a Church Youth Group
  • helping a Teacher
  • helping in the School Library
  • after school club
  • giving help in the community, etc.

Please contact Ms. DeHaven, Ms. Silver, or Ms. Roddey if you have additional questions.
