My partner and I share the same birthday. If you think that sounds fun, you’re not alone – but you’re also very wrong.
Think about it: What’s the one day of the year you don’t want to compromise? When can you selfishly eat your favorite foods and do all your favorite things? And what happens when your partner loves sleeping in and ice cream cake, but you want to hike at sunrise and blow out candles from atop an orange chiffon cake?
Maybe that’s why I love solo travel so much. When I’m exploring a new destination on my own, every day can feel like my birthday. There is no compromising on the agenda, budget or destination. I can spend my days hiking through seaside caves (as I did on a recent trip to French Polynesia), lazing poolside with a book or signing up for a tour if I want to connect with other travelers and locals in my destination. The choice is mine.
For me, solo travel proves that you can have your orange chiffon cake and eat it, too.
