| Artist and Mindfulness Expert, Mimi Chao, is Ditching Screens and Going Natural |
This week, we’re checking in with artist Mimi Chao, who after an extremely productive last few years making books and prints, teaching classes, and even doing an artist signing at Disney’s WonderGround Gallery plans to spend her 2026 illustrating off-screen, communing with the natural earth, and protecting her creative practice by staying organized, motivated, and authentic.

| Q: What’s one lesson you’re bringing forward into 2026? |
| Mimi: What happens within me is 100% up to me. |
| Q: How do you like to start your year? Are there any rituals or routines that help you set the tone for the months ahead? |
| Mimi: I love the new year as a time to reflect and check in with myself. I don’t set specific new year’s resolutions or goals, but I always have an intention and direction in mind. I like to use the week between Christmas and New Year’s as dedicated time for deep reflection, which includes journaling, documenting my projects from the past year, gathering inspiration, decluttering mental & physical space, and loosely planning for the new year. |
| Q: If you were designing your own personal curriculum for the year, what would it include? |
| Mimi: I actually did design my own personal curriculum! It started with a Creative Alignment Practice which I just finished, and included exploring and researching topics I am interested in (mostly creative sustainability and deep ecology). I’m carrying the results of that practice into a curriculum on natural earth pigments (books, recipes, practices), combined with the drawing and exploring practices I shared in my class from last year, Natural Explorer. |
