Going Back to Grey Gardens |
The canonical documentary Grey Gardens was released widely in February of 1976, smack-dab in the middle of the women’s lib movement—timing that was either impeccable or atrocious, depending entirely on whom you were asking. Those interpretations hinge upon how a given viewer might interpret the Beales themselves: Were they financially desperate victims of patriarchal systems that embarrassed and exploited them? Or were they defiant objectors to societal norms, rightfully cashing in by telling their story of nonconformity on their own terms? As the film turns 50 years old, Rosemary Counter considers its legacy.
Elsewhere in HWD, Tracee Ellis Ross takes us inside her office; Margaret Heidenry tells the unbelievable story of America’s first K-pop superstars; Stellan Skarsgård opens up about Sentimental Value; and Robyn reveals the inspiration behind her new album, Sexistential. |
