A consulting client once told me:
"You get more done in 4 hours than my last team could in a week."
I didn't take it as a compliment.
See I was charging $160 per hour. It was a decent rate, don't get me wrong.
But I did the mental math:
"2 developers at $50 per hour. 40 hours in a week. That's 4k!"
By being faster, I was actually losing money...
My client was getting the value of two full-time developers staffed for a week, for 4% of the cost.
It wasn't until I started charging for the value I offered clients, that I finally got out of the hourly trap.
This is something all top tier consultants know. There's a better way to make money as a service provider. You charge a percentage of the impact you're making on the business - not an hourly rate.
In the Technical Guidance Offer Workshop, I'm teaching experienced software professionals how to create a solo offer they can sell on the side of their day job - priced by its value to the business.
When you make money this way, it offers you a stable path to transition into self-employment.
The irony is most people never start. They get hung up on picking "the right offer". That's not what stops them - they never start.
Most employees in tech are sitting on a goldmine of experiences that can be sold for more than a salary. It's easy to forget that a problem we've already solved is still a problem for many other companies.
There's no way to know for sure which of your career experiences would make a high-value repeatable offer. The way you find out, is to pick something, package it the right way, and start talking to potential clients about it!
If you're tired of making a big impact over and over at companies, only to be thrown the next problem as your reward - maybe now's the time to take back control over your career?
The next Technical Guidance Offer Workshop starts March 16th.
