I'm going to say something that might sound bold, but I genuinely believe it:

Humour is the pinnacle of fluency.

Think about it. If you can make someone laugh in a language that isn't your own – if you can be witty, quick and keep up with that fast-paced back and forth – that is truly impressive. It's one of the clearest signs that you've reached real proficiency in a language.

And even just understanding jokes is huge!

Being able to catch wordplay, pick up on double meanings and follow how native speakers like to twist and play with language is a seriously advanced skill.
