Kicking off

Mike Vrabel, his coaching staff and the Patriots brass descended upon Indianapolis this week for the NFL's Scouting Combine.

After a quick post-Super Bowl break, Vrabel & Co. are focused on the 2026 team and continuing to improve the product.

Between having another productive draft, signing impact free agents, and keeping a few key in-house free agents, Vrabel and personnel heads Eliot Wolf and Ryan Cowden have their work cut out for them.

They have needs to fill, most notably at edge rusher, offensive tackle, wide receiver, tight end, and safety.

Eliot, the team's executive VP of Player Personnel, says the team won't stand pat.

"We're going to explore every avenue to try to improve the team," Wolf said during his media availability at the Combine. "We filled a lot of needs last year and we're still building. We have areas that maybe we feel good about the starters, but maybe the depth is not where we want it to be.

"We have areas where we maybe need to add a starter. So, I think it's going to be sort of a holistic approach, and working together with Coach Vrabel, his staff, the scouting staff, Richard Miller and Matt Groh on the contract side, we're going to try to build this thing to improve the team as best we can."

Vrabel, speaking a day after Wolf, echoed those sentiments.

"We want to have a plan," Vrabel said, "and we want to bring in really talented players that we have a vision for, that we also believe in the type of character that they have as we build this team and improve on what we did this year."

It's doubtful the Patriots will spend as much as they did last year during free agency. But between landing key players on the local market, and the draft, it behooves Vrabel & Co. to continue making strides.

This Week In History

(Each week, MassLive will dig back into the past, pick a certain year, and time-frame, and relive what was happening with the Patriots)

The year: 2010

The news: It's fun to turn back the clock. Just like this week, I was at the NFL Combine 16 years ago. As it so happens, I caught up with Mike Vrabel, who had been traded to the Kansas City Chiefs the previous year. He said he was open to a return to Foxborough. He just didn't think it would happen. “I’d go back in a heartbeat. Why wouldn’t I?” Vrabel said. “Put it this way: I’d go back, but I highly doubt they’d want me back.” Little did he know what was in store for him down the road becoming the team's head coach, and taking the Patriots back to the Super Bowl. Also at the Combine, one of the topics of the week was Bill Belichick not having enough coaches who were willing to disagree with him.

Also, a week earlier, I caught up with Randy Moss. He was lamenting his future in New England, believing he would be out the door because the Patriots wouldn't pay him. He did wind up out the door, but that's because he wasn't getting along with then-Patriots offensive coordinator Bill O'Brien.

Patriots Question of the Week

Here is this week's highlighted question:

Do you think the Patriots will take another kick at the can, and draft a wide receiver this year? - Kerri from Hingham

Guregian: No matter what happens with Stefon Diggs, whether or not the Patriots are willing to swallow his high cap number and salary to keep him, they still need more playmakers at the position.

Patriots GM Eliot Wolf said as much during the NFL Combine this week, saying: "Having more playmakers is a good thing."

Mike Vrabel likes Kyle Williams (2025 third round pick) and is hoping he'll develop further, but the Patriots still need to take swings in the draft.

And, I think they will.
