On Wednesday, we relaunched the Midi as a daily medium-size crossword. We have seen your fervor for the puzzles in your responses to Gameplay, in our email inboxes, in the comments of our articles and everywhere else you share feedback.
The puzzles will be accessible only on our website or in our app, which means that we’re able to incorporate special visual or technical elements far more often in these puzzles. In the article linked below, Ian Livengood, the game’s editor, said that he hopes to run special puzzles like this around once per week. He has also enlisted an elite roster of constructing talent and a fresh, free approach to editing that should make the Midi feel different from its smaller and larger counterparts.
One change that will affect Gameplay readers: We will no longer have a separate Midi in this newsletter every week. The best place to get it is in the Games app. We will be adding a lot of new content to Gameplay in the coming weeks that we hope you’ll enjoy, but it will take us some time to get everything ready. In the meantime, we’ll share puzzles from our archives, with exclusive comments from our editors about why they love them. This week, Ian shares one of his favorites.
This is a great puzzle that’s accessible (it’s a Monday, after all), yet clever. The puzzle took a familiar gimmick and turned it into something original and fun. 27-Across, in particular, is such an amazing find. The two reactions it inspires in me are hallmarks of a great puzzle: looking for other possible theme examples outside the puzzle and wishing I had thought of the theme. — Ian Livengood
