Don't let these tools kill your creativity.‌

Hey a,

We're living in a crazy time as producers.

From iconic tube EQs to even the most esoteric mastering compressor, every tool you can imagine is either available for free or just one $29 purchase away.

On the surface, this is great: Easy, affordable access to professional tools means more self-empowered artists and less gatekeeping.

In essence, that's what the philosophy of Pick Yourself is all about.

But here's the hard truth:

Whatever plugin you're currently considering buying is probably a bad idea.

It won't get you that "big, analog-sounding low end", that "unique shimmer in the top end", or whatever fairytale-marketing-gibberish the plugin manufacturer promises you.

Not because plugins are bad.

In fact, they're so good that even the pros have a hard time distinguishing them from the hardware in a blind test.

So what's the issue?

When you have unlimited options, you spend more time choosing than actually using. You know many tools superficially instead of a few tools really well.

Take the classic Pultec tube EQ as an example.

Most producers use it without knowing how the different bands interact due to the passive design philosophy.

Not knowing this feature and its implications is like owning a race car but only driving it in the parking lot.

Even worse, you start adding processing just because you have that cool new plugin in your arsenal instead of critically assessing what the track actually needs.

I've seen countless producers with massive plugin collections who can't finish tracks for months.

Meanwhile, others create a great-sounding track in a day just using stock tools.

So when should you actually consider getting external plugins?

Here's a plugin purchase framework you can follow:

Level 1: Stick with your DAW's stock tools

This is for producers who are still learning the basics.

Chances are you're overwhelmed already so adding more tools to the mix won't help you at all.

Resist the urge, continue with what you have.

Level 2: Get tools that improve your efficiency

This is for intermediate producers who are comfortable with their DAW and have finished a few tracks already.

Sound-wise, most stock tools still get the job done.

But certain plugins make you faster and more effective with your decisions.

FabFilter's Pro Q4 is a good example. It doesn't sound dramatically different from stock EQs, but it helps you get to a better result faster.

Level 3: Get specialized plugins to achieve certain sonic goals

This is for semi-professional producers who have solid critical listening skills and know exactly what they're looking for.

Here's an example from my mastering work: I bought a specialized saturation tool called "The Oven" because I needed subtle saturation on cymbals without adding harshness.

I tried everything else - stock tools, other analog emulations. They were all hit-and-miss, depending on the material I was working on.

This one solved it and it works every time.

Level 4: Get various tools to broaden your sonic palette

This is only for full-time professionals working on other people's records every week.

You have to be at the level where you actually hear the difference between two mastering-grade limiters.

You're competing with the best and need that last 0.1% of quality for your clients.

Most producers are stuck at Level 1 but shopping at Level 4.

They buy professional tools hoping to shortcut the learning process.

Forget about the shortcuts, ignore the hype, and focus on building the skills your future self will thank you for.

Your music matters. Let's make it count.
