Skills “R” Us!
According to LinkedIn’s latest Skills on the Rise report, we’re in for some accelerating workplace changes. Globally, 38% of job skills shifted between 2016 and 2023, but that’s looking to increase up to 70% by 2030 due to the rise of generative AI. And with hiring still down (16% lower than pre-pandemic levels), honing your skills is incredibly important since recruiters have begun seriously filtering by skills data.
Job titles may begin to matter less, with skills mattering even more. This is tough considering that 43% of professionals worry they don’t have the requisite skills for the future job market, and 1 in 5 citing skills gaps as impediments to their job searches. In a tough (and slow) market, standing out means leveraging your skills—which you do have—and being as specific as possible.
If you’re looking to hone your skills, the fastest growing set that recruiters are looking for all have to do with AI. On the tech front, AI engineering, prompt engineering, data annotation, and AI business strategy are surging. But human skills are just as integral. Think: cross-functional team management, mentorship, executive and stakeholder communication, and operational efficiency. Employers want people who are skilled in AI, but they need people who can guide others through this new tech, too.
According to expert predictions, the future of the workplace belongs to professionals who can translate complexity and newness into efficient execution. So, how can you benefit from this shift? Audit your current skill stack and identify one technical capability and one leadership capability to build out this year. Use accessible learning tools—like LinkedIn Learning or MasterClass—to close the gap proactively, rather than panicking later.
