| Dear Carolyn: Tell me if I’m being petty. Our large extended family is talking about taking a beach vacation together this summer, like we did two summers ago. I’m saying to my husband I’d like to opt out. The primary reason is I don’t want to see my sister-in-law in her swimsuit. We are both 50. I have around the average body of a 50-year-old American woman. Sister-in-law has the body of an Olympic swimmer, and wears swimsuits much more revealing than an Olympic swimmer’s. I get it — she is very strict about her diet, she exercises every day and she wants to show off the results. But when I’ve been around her on the beach before, I’ve found myself very resentful that she’s flaunting something she has and I do not. I have kids and she does not. Is that relevant? I’m not sure. My husband thinks this would be a ridiculous reason not to go on this vacation. Do you agree? — I Don’t Want to See |
