Read Across America Week - March 2-6

Read Across America is a National Education Association initiative created for the purpose of spreading the joy and excitement of reading with kids. From March 2-6, students and staff will celebrate our love of reading with our Read Across America Spirit Week.

Read Across America Week

National School Social Work Week

March 2-8 is National School Social Work Week. Social workers in FCPS help to prevent social, emotional, and behavioral factors from affecting a student's ability to perform at their best. Their primary goal is to remove barriers that prevent a student from fulfilling their academic potential. Learn more about the role of social workers in FCPS.

Thank you to our outstanding school social worker, Courtney Marques, for all she does to support our students, staff, and families!

Daylight Saving Begins (Spring Forward)

Daylight saving time will begin Sunday, March 8, at 2 a.m. Don’t forget to move your clocks ahead one hour!

Family Engagement Survey

The FCPS Office of Communication would like to invite all families to participate in taking this year’s Family Engagement survey. The survey will be available from March 9-March 23. All parents/guardians will receive an e-mail directly from FCPS about the survey on Monday, March 9, which you will be able to complete on most electronic devices, including smartphones.  We encourage you to use the link sent to your e-mail to complete this survey, but we will have paper copies available in the front office if needed, beginning on Monday, March 9.

Family input in a child’s education is critical to their success, and your assistance with this survey is invaluable. Thank you!

Our program will invite community peers,  who are aged 3 - 4 years old, to join our classrooms. The early childhood special education program uses a child-centered approach to learning. The goal of this program is to encourage active learning and promote social interaction and acceptance.

Please complete the attached interest form or  Families Interested in Community Peer Program Google Form if you would like your 3-4 year old child to be considered for the Community Peer Program.

Attendance is Important: Attend Today, Achieve Tomorrow!

School accreditation ratings in Virginia are based on student performance across nine school quality indicators within the state’s Student Performance and Support Framework (SPSF). One of these indicators is chronic absenteeism. Chronic Absenteeism is defined as missing 10% or more of the school year, regardless of reason and whether the absence was excused or unexcused.  A student is determined to be chronically absent if the rate of their days absent divided by their total days in membership is greater than or equal to 10% - that is only 2 days per month on average.

As of March 4, Cub Run’s Year to Date Chronic Absenteeism rate has increased to 11.4%, being in the yellow zone. As we finish out the remainder of this school year, we will continue to update this percentage with you in hopes that we can move into an acceptable chronic absenteeism rate of 10% or lower.

Positivity Project

This week, our school is focusing on the character strength of Humility. Humility means not seeking attention and letting your actions speak for themselves. Humble people understand their abilities and achievements without underestimating them. They can admit mistakes, accept advice, and are open to new ideas. They don't show off their successes or possessions.

Developing humility helps people reflect on how they can improve and work well with others. It allows them to grow and become valuable team members.

To practice and encourage the character strength of humility at home, please visit The Positivity Project’s mobile-friendly P2 for Families (available in English and Spanish), where you will watch a video together and discuss a quote and three questions. Below are links to this week’s P2 for Families lessons. Click on the grade level that best meets your child’s needs.

Thank you for your support!
