Kicking off

Free agency is on deck next week.

The tampering period starts Monday, with free agency officially kicking off Wednesday at 4 p.m.

It's an important time for all NFL teams.

For the Patriots, they should be on a mission to improve a team that reached the Super Bowl.

While defense seems to be a focus, particularly with needs at edge rusher, safety and linebacker, it's important for Mike Vrabel & Co. to make a point of helping Drake Maye.

If the goal is to get over the final hurdle and win a seventh championship, the franchise quarterback needs a better supporting cast.

Whether it's enhancing the offensive line, the receiver and tight end positions, that has to be a top priority.

While subtracting Stefon Diggs, the team's leading receiver, was understandable in a lot of ways given his age, and financial ramifications, that just intensifies the need to give Maye more game-changing threats, more playmakers.

By unloading Diggs, the Patriots freed up some cash. So they have more money to spend. It would be disappointing if they didn't land a top receiver when all the smoke clears.

This Week In History

(Each week, MassLive will dig back into the past, pick a certain year, and time-frame, and relive what was happening with the Patriots)

The year: 2002

The news: This was a sweet time frame for the Patriots. They were a month removed from upsetting the St. Louis Rams and the Greatest Show on Turf in the Super Bowl. They were the darlings of New England, and that week, had a red-carpet premier of Super Bowl XXXVI in a Boston theatre near the Common.

In between smelling the roses, there was also business to attend to in order to insure they wouldn't be a one-hit wonder.

Super Bowl hero Adam Vinatieri was re-signed to a three-year deal. Running back Antowain Smith was also re-signed. Meanwhile, the wheels were in motion for Drew Bledsoe to be traded to Buffalo in April, clearing the decks for Tom Brady. Terry Glenn was also shipped to Green Bay.

There was also movement in the coaching staff. Ivan Fears, the wide receivers coach since 1999, flipped to running backs coach. He was a fixture there through five more championships.

Patriots Question of the Week

Here is this week's highlighted question:

Do you expect the Patriots to make a big splash in free agency this year? - Tory from Mansfield

Guregian: I don't expect them to dish out over $200 million in guaranteed money this year, like last year. But, having gotten to the Super Bowl, I'm expecting they'll pick their spots.

The release of Stefon Diggs frees up the type of cash that would allow them to take at least one big swing or two. My guess is if they sign someone to big money, it'll either be at receiver or edge rusher.
