SCHS ATTENDANCE INFORMATION 2025-26

Recently, we have seen an increase in students leaving campus without following proper check-out procedures. This has resulted in inaccurate records regarding student location and safety. To ensure our staff can account for every student and to retrieve students in the least disruptive way to classroom instruction, the following procedures are required, effective immediately:

• 2-Hour Advance Notice Required: All early dismissal requests must be submitted at least two hours in advance. We will no longer process last-minute phone calls or messages for immediate pickup. Please plan appointments accordingly, as requests failing to meet this lead time will not be honored.
• Illness & Clinic Protocol: If a student feels ill, they MUST report to the School Clinic. Students will only be dismissed for medical reasons after being evaluated by the clinic staff and checked out from that location.
• Official Office Check-Out: All students leaving early must physically check out through the Main Office. Any student who leaves campus without following this procedure will be marked with an unexcused absence.
• Attendance Corrections: If a student is marked UNV for a specific period due to lateness or a clerical error, the student must speak with that teacher directly. The teacher will then update the attendance or notify the attendance team. The Attendance Offices will not alter period-specific attendance without teacher verification.

These procedures are in place to ensure student safety and a focused learning environment. We thank you for your cooperation and for helping us maintain an accurate and secure campus.

As we approach the end of the 3rd quarter, we want to provide an update regarding student parking. We currently have fewer than 50 parking passes available for the remainder of the school year.

If your student plans to drive to school, please register and complete your payment as soon as possible to ensure they secure a spot. Once these remaining passes are sold, we will be at full capacity.

Greetings, SoCo families,

This has been one of the most accomplished and inspiring weeks of our school year. Across academics, athletics, the arts, and student leadership, our community has demonstrated excellence, resilience, and pride in ways that truly reflect the very best of who we are. I am excited to share a few reflections and highlights from this exceptional week.

Student and Staff Belonging

Stallions on the National Stage

Last weekend, several of our Leadership students took their talents to Washington, D.C. to participate in a national student leadership conference, proudly representing SoCo on a much larger stage. They heard from Olympic gold medalist Laurie Hernandez, who spoke candidly about perseverance, excellence, and the importance of caring for one’s mental health even while striving for greatness. Students also deepened their understanding of how to use artificial intelligence responsibly and effectively to strengthen student voice and school impact. In a moment that made our entire community proud, Bella Stephens and Andrew Grane took the microphone to deliver an inspiring presentation on the power of students and staff partnering together to shape school culture, proving that when Stallions run together, we don’t just follow the path, we help forge it.

Stallions Set the Standard at States

This weekend, 69 Stallions competed at the DECA State Leadership Conference in Virginia Beach, the largest gathering in Virginia DECA history, and represented South County with distinction. Our chapter captured the highest-ranking Blue Chip Annual Report Award, earned a newly elected state officer position, and celebrated multiple individual roleplay honors. Thirteen students advanced to international competition across business plan, innovation, marketing campaign, and student-based enterprise categories. Like a well-run enterprise operating at full capacity, our DECA program continues to model excellence, ambition, and Stallion pride at every level. A special shout-out to William Allen, who was named as the 2026–2027 Vice President of Career Development! Go SoCo!

Voices That Lead

We look forward to welcoming families and students to two important advisory gatherings on March 18: the Parent Advisory Council at 5:00 p.m. and the Principal’s Student Advisory Council at 10:15 a.m. These sessions are not simply meetings; they are meaningful opportunities to help guide and enhance the Stallion experience. Your insights and perspectives play a vital role in shaping the culture and direction of SoCo.

Parents are encouraged to  sign up in advance and join us, as your partnership continues to strengthen our school community. Students may sign up using the QR codes posted in the cafeteria to reserve a seat and represent their peers. When families and students actively engage in leadership, our entire community benefits.

Honesty Shines Bright: Cade Stewart Leads the Way!

Cade Stewart demonstrated true Stallion spirit by turning in a $100 bill he found in the halls, an extraordinary act of Honesty that makes us all proud! His quick decision to do the right thing shows a maturity and character beyond his years, and it reminds us why our students continue to inspire every day. After congratulating him, Cade shared that his most inspirational staff member is his Science teacher, Mrs. Cousins, who exemplifies Trust by always being there for him. Cade’s integrity, thoughtfulness, and respect for others set a gold-standard example for the entire SoCo community. Way to go, Cade! Your integrity and admiration for our amazing staff make you a shining example of what it means to be a Stallion!

Region Reign to State Stride: Stallions Still Running

Our Boys and Girls Basketball teams captured the Occoquan Region Championships last weekend at Robinson Secondary School, showcasing Stallion strength, skill, and spirit. The girls advanced into state play with determination and heart; while their postseason run has concluded, their grit and grace under pressure have made our entire community incredibly proud.

Our boys carried that regional momentum into the state tournament, winning their first-round matchup and continuing their championship chase. They will face Landstown High School this Friday night at SoCo, and we look forward to packing the stands with a sea of spirited, supportive Stallions as they battle boldly on their home court.

Keep It Moving, Stallions: Safe & Smooth Arrival Matters

To ensure a safe and efficient arrival and dismissal process, we ask all families to please use the three designated Kiss and Ride locations for both morning drop-off and afternoon pick-up. We kindly request that parents refrain from using the Senior Lot, as it creates congestion beyond what that area can safely accommodate. Seniors have reported difficulty entering and exiting due to additional vehicles blocking access, and your cooperation helps us maintain a smooth, secure flow of traffic for all. Thank you in advance for everyone’s cooperation.

Coach's Corner

Our Advisory teachers are checking in with their students this week on their wellness and academics.  A key aspect of a positive school environment is maintaining strong, positive relationships. As we move into the second half of the year, we encourage students to reflect on the friendships and connections they've built. At home, discuss the importance of kindness, respect, and communication with peers and adults. These social-emotional skills are invaluable and continue to grow both in and out of the classroom.

Club Spotlight:

The SoCo Emergency Relief Club is dedicated to supporting the community during crises such as natural disasters and other emergencies. Members raise funds, organize drives to collect essential supplies, and assemble hygiene and first aid kits for the local community center. In addition to providing immediate aid, the club promotes emergency preparedness by teaching practical skills like creating a family emergency plan and hosting guest speakers, including representatives from the Lorton fire station to discuss fire safety. All students are welcome to join, and those with questions may contact the club sponsor, Ms. Hansen, at vnhansen@fcps.edu.

As we close this edition, we’re reminded that what makes our community special isn’t just the name on the building; it’s the spirit inside it. The pride in our classrooms, the passion on our stages and fields, the joy in our hallways, and the unwavering commitment to one another make this place extraordinary. And that’s why we’re not just SoCo; we’re SoCool.

SAVE THE DATE - 2026 Virtual Military Night

FCPS School Counseling Services is hosting a Virtual Military Night on Wednesday, March 18th, 2026, from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. This event is designed for high school students and their families interested in learning more about military pathways and opportunities. Enlistment, Service Academies, and ROTC pathways will be represented.

Links to the Zoom presentations will be shared directly with High School Directors of Student Services and College and Career Specialists for distribution.

Mark your calendars! On March 7th, the SOCO Bands will host an AIA Drumline and Winterguard show featuring 70 performances from schools across the state.

Doors open at 8:00 a.m., with incredible Winterguard performances in the morning, followed by an exciting afternoon of Drumline showcases. This event is open to the public—we hope to see you there!

Community Basketball Competition

Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery (ASVAB) - April 9th

The Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery (ASVAB) is for Juniors and Seniors interested in career exploration or with plans to enlist in the military after graduation. The ASVAB will be offered at South County on Thursday, April 9th. This is a GREEN day.

All Current 10^th grade HPE students are required to attend one of the 4 scheduled PSTD (Partners for Safe Teen Driving) sessions held here at South County.  This is part of the completion of the classroom portion of the Drivers Education curriculum in 10^th grade HPE.

Students and a parent/guardian are required to attend one of the 90 minute session on one of the 4 evenings. 

Sessions begin promptly at 7:00 pm in the auditorium- doors will close at that time with no late admittance.
