Weekly update for March 6, 2026

a

Dear Columbia families and friends,

We have had another exceptional week of growth and learning at CES! I want to extend a special thank you to Ms. Ames, our dedicated librarian, and our incredible PTA for facilitating such an engaging Read Across America Week. It was truly inspiring to witness the enthusiasm of our students and staff as they celebrated a shared love of literacy and reached new reading milestones together.

Have a great weekend!

Take care,

Mike Astudillo

Proud Principal

Art Class with Mrs. McKenna!

s

Did you know that March is Youth Art Month? We have many incredible and creative artists here at Columbia. Help celebrate your CES artist and support our school by purchasing their artwork printed on some of the many cool items offered through our Art to Remember fundraiser. Order forms will be sent home in the next week or so. Purchases should be made online at https://arttoremember.com/school/z2phtl and orders are due by April 13th. Below are some of the fun things that are happening in the art room this quarter.

  • Kindergarteners have been learning about architecture, experimenting with printing with cardboard, and using recyclable materials to make self-portraits.
  • 1st graders have been learning different paper sculpture techniques to embellish their animal masks and are working on a paper weaving about the different generations of their family.
  • In 2nd grade, students are sculpting ceramic animals and learning about animal habitats by creating a 3-D habitat for their clay animals.
  • Our 3rd graders have been busy painting about memories of a day at the park and will be starting a fiber art weaving project.
  • 4th graders have been working hard on their memento stitchery projects and will be starting a Virginia landscape painting soon.
  • In 5thgrade, students have created some imaginative ceramic face jugs and are exploring printmaking and radial symmetry.

Mark your calendars--Our Annandale Pyramid Art Show will be on April 14th at Annandale HS! Thank you as always, for your continued support of our Art program and a special thank you to those of you who have been sending in recycled bubble wrap envelopes- we need more!

Sincerely, Michelle McKenna (Art Teacher)
