After decades of covert operations and proxy battles, what brought Iran and Israel, the “two most powerful states in the Middle East,” into open warfare? That’s the question Suzanne Maloney took on in a sweeping 2024 essay, written a few months after Iran launched missiles at Israeli territory for the first time. In one of the clearest accounts on the subject, she traces how the two countries became “mortal enemies” and how Hamas’s October 7, 2023, attack on Israel changed “the fundamental rules of the game” in the Middle East. She predicted that Iran and Israel could end up in “a full-scale war—one that could draw in the United States and have a devastating effect on the region and the global economy.” A week into that war, Maloney’s essay remains one of the most definitive explanations for how we got here.
