The Measured Mom

Have you ever wondered why one student can sound out "cat" on the first page and read it automatically on the next page ... while another student is still sounding out "cat" after reading the whole book?

It all comes down to orthographic mapping.

When a student reads a word, their brain is connecting the letters and spelling patterns to the sounds and meaning they already know.

The more times that connection is made successfully, the more automatic the word becomes.

When students can read the word automatically - they've mapped it.

But here's the thing.

Students require different numbers of exposures to the word before they've mapped it. For some students, it could be 1-4 exposures. For others ... it could be 30 or more.

We don't know how many times it will take for each student.

That's why we need to create lots of opportunities for students to practice the phonics patterns they've been taught.

Fluency grids, roll and read activities, sentence reading games — all of these give students repeated, varied practice opportunities with phonics patterns.
