Six Iranian football players have now claimed asylum in Australia. The first group of five women were joined by two others, but one of them subsequently changed her mind and returned to Iran. Concerns about the team's safety were sparked when footage of a state TV host emerged calling them "traitors" who ought to be punished after they declined to sing the national anthem at their first Asian Cup match last week. After the team were seen singing the anthem in their two subsequent matches, critics became concerned that they were being forced to take part by the government officials accompanying them. By then, a network of Australia-based activists had already kicked into gear.
