Greetings!Sunday's Academy Awards is shaping up to be a battle between titans, with "Sinners" and "One Battle After Another" facing off in a record 11 different categories, including Best Picture. As our Steve Pond writes, the numbers are ridiculous. “Sinners,” Ryan Coogler’s genre-bending rampage that looks at race relations through the lens of a period piece-vampire story mash-up, has a record-shattering 16 nominations. “One Battle,” Paul Thomas Anderson’s wild look at revolutionary fervor over decades, has 13, only one shy of the previous high. The face-off is a real boon to the Oscars, lending an element of unpredictability. It helps that both films saw commercial success in comparison to last year's winner, indie darling "Anora." "Sinner" in particular was a smash hit at the box office, having grossed nearly $379 million worldwide. "One Battle" has fared relatively poorly at the box office, grossing just $209 million globally on a $130 million budget, but still a lot wider an audience than in other years. Pond predicts that "One Battle" will win four of the head-to-head contests, while "Sinners" would win another four, while the final three will go to other nominees.
