Kicking off

It was pretty clear from the outset, the Patriots weren't going to go all-out on a spending spree in free agency, like they did last year.

But that didn't mean it would preclude them from splurging here and there on a few free agents in areas of need.

And, credit to Mike Vrabel & Co., that's exactly what's transpired over the course of the tampering period and opening days of free agency.

The Patriots still have some holes to fill, most notably at edge rusher. But they've managed to make some upgrades in key areas in the defensive backfield and offensive line.

Coming off an appearance in the Super Bowl, it was important for the Patriots to not only maintain their level, but to improve in areas that would help put them over the top.

Patriots Executive VP of Player Personnel Eliot Wolf said Thursday the team was "happy" with the players assembled and at this stage, wouldn't be tied to selecting players out of need in the draft.

The marquee free agents signed include wide receiver Romeo Doubs, safety Kevin Byard, defensive end Dre-Mont Jones and offensive lineman Alijah Vera-Tucker.

So they are off to a pretty good start. But they can still get better. A.J. Brown is still lurking. Adding him would be the cherry on top.

This Week In History

(Each week, MassLive will dig back into the past, pick a certain year, and time-frame, and relive what was happening with the Patriots)

The year: 2023

The news: Devin McCourty announced his retirement March 10. The cornerback-turned-safety was a key figure in the Patriots second run of Super Bowl wins. McCourty was an instrumental part of the second three-Super Bowl win decade with the team and one of the last to exit to exit the scene.

The Patriots were also losing their grip as a contending team. The team lost Jacobi Meyers in free agency which didn't help a struggling Mac Jones. And Bill Belichick seemed to be losing his magic when it came to building a winning team all of which paved the way for his final season in New England.

Patriots Question of the Week

Here is this week's highlighted question:

Do you think the Patriots will still make a trade for A.J. Brown after signing Romeo Doubs? - Tory from Mansfield

Guregian: I don't rule it out. I think the Patriots will continue to pursue Brown. But if they can't get the Eagles off their asking price (a first and second round pick), I don't see it happening.

It's also important to note that the Eagles would really like to move him, given how outspoken and critical Brown has been of both head coach Nick Sirianni and quarterback Jalen Hurts.

They'd also like to move him after June 1 to help mitigate a potential $43 million dead cap hit.

I think the Patriots remain the frontrunner to land him, if they're able to soften the demands.
