Taipei, Taiwan, March 17, 2026— As multi-site operations become the norm, enterprises increasingly require reliable cross-location data transfer and offsite backup capabilities, yet not every deployment scenario justifies the cost and complexity of a full networking infrastructure. Addressing this need, QNAP Systems, Inc. today announced the launch of [2] QuWAN Express, a lightweight VPN networking solution that extends QNAP’s QuWAN SD-WAN architecture to enable encrypted, point-to-point NAS-to-NAS connectivity without additional routers, simplifying cross-site data transfer and offsite backup.
Complementing use cases, not rebuilding the architecture
Within existing [3] QuWAN SD-WANdeployments, centralized network backbones built on QHora routers remain the foundation for enterprise-wide network management and security. QuWAN Express is not intended to replace this architecture, but rather to complement it by addressing deployment scenarios that require greater flexibility. These include temporary sites, smaller branch offices, or environments where NAS systems need to be incorporated into the QuWAN ecosystem to enable mutual connectivity and direct access to NAS resources across the organization.
“By introducing QuWAN Express, we are extending the flexibility of the QuWAN architecture into storage-centric scenarios,” said Ruby Chan, Product Manager at QNAP. “This allows organizations to bring NAS systems into the QuWAN connectivity framework at different stages and scales of deployment—without compromising security or taking on unnecessary network overhead.”
Lowering the barrier to cross-site NAS connectivity
For organizations that have not deployed QNAP routers but still require secure data transfer or backup between remote NAS systems, QuWAN Express provides a more direct and streamlined approach. Using QNAP’s cloud-based Super Node relay service, NAS devices can automatically establish secure VPN connections even without public IP addresses or when operating behind multiple layers of firewalls—eliminating the need for manual port forwarding, firewall configuration, or IP address conflict management, and significantly reducing deployment time and operational complexity.
QuWAN Express supports point-to-point connectivity for up to three NAS devices, making it ideal for cross-region data exchange and offsite backup. The service includes 15 GB of free monthly data transfer, and once the limit is reached, traffic is throttled to maintain continuity for critical connections. Additional bandwidth and capacity can be flexibly added through the [4] QNAP Software Store.
For enterprises planning multi-site data architectures or seeking to simplify offsite backup and cross-site synchronization workflows, QuWAN Express provides a lightweight, quickly deployable option. By reducing network deployment friction, it allows NAS connectivity to scale naturally with operational needs—without becoming a constraint in network planning.
