Debate over Massachusetts transgender athlete policyMassachusetts law allows students to compete on school sports teams based on gender identity. A 2011 law known as “An Act Relative to Gender Identity” added gender identity as a protected class in Massachusetts public schools. Following that law, the Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education directed the Massachusetts Interscholastic Athletic Association to allow athletes to compete on teams based on their self-selected gender identity. Supporters say the policy promotes inclusion in school sports. Critics argue the policy creates competitive disadvantages for female athletes.
