Scoot cute in Arlington with four key safety tips: 1. Use a bike lane (when present) 2. Ride with one person per scooter 3. Park the scooter out of the way of sidewalks or ramps 4. Wear a helmet and avoid hanging items. Visit Arlington’s Scooter and e-Bike Safety page for more information about safe riding and parking.
In spring 2025, Arlington County collaborated with the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) to launch a safety pilot project at Route 50 & N/S Highland St to address a pattern of high-speed angle crashes involving turning vehicles. The pilot tested the use of signs, markings, and flex posts to restrict left turns and north/south through movements at the intersection as an interim safety treatment ahead of a long-term, VDOT-led project scheduled for construction in 2030.
Since the pilot launched, there have been significant crash reductions, reductions in vehicle speeds, and community support for this interim safety treatment. Given the positive results, Arlington and VDOT will apply similar left turn and through restrictions to all unsignalized intersections on Route 50 between Filmore St and Glebe Rd, as well as a left turn restriction at Irving St (a Vision Zero Action Spot location). The turn and through restrictions will remain in place until the VDOT Route 50 STARS project installs a permanent median and intersection improvements in 2030. Route 50 & N/S Columbus St (further west on the corridor), exhibits similar conditions and crash patterns. Therefore, the flex post closure will also be applied at N/S Columbus St. Installations are anticipated for spring/summer 2026 pending final approval of land use permits from VDOT.

In April, we will share a draft of the Action Plan Update for your review. We’ll be seeking feedback on the new action items and overall updates to Arlington’s Vision Zero program structure. Look out for an announcement next month with information on how to engage virtually, in person, or by mail. View the Action Plan Update project page.
Join county staff and community representatives on Tuesday, April 28, from 7:00pm to 8:30pm for the virtual Vision Zero External Stakeholders Group (ESG) meeting. The objective of this meeting is to gather feedback on the draft Vision Zero Action Plan and the updated draft action items that will guide our path to zero traffic fatalities and serious injuries by 2030. We will review the feedback that ESG organizations shared in February and how we incorporated it into the plan. All community members are encouraged to join the meeting. For more information and the meeting link view the event page.
We launched the Tactical Speed Hump Pilot in late 2023 to obtain data on how effective tactical speed humps are at lowering driver speeds in neighborhoods and gather experience and input from the community on the materials. Since 2023, we’ve gone through three rounds of installations and learned:
- Speed data showed major speed reductions.
- Community input favored the safety benefits and expansion of speed humps but showed mixed feelings on the materials.
- Maintenance experiences discouraged further use of tactical devices.
Due to the high maintenance needs and the feedback received about the tactical devices, Arlington will close the tactical speed hump pilot and discontinue future purchasing or applications of tactical speed humps. Existing tactical speed humps have been repaired since the snow event damage and will remain in place until they require further maintenance with the exception of 15th St N, which will be converted to asphalt speed humps in coming weeks.
The tactical speed humps pilot was a first step on Arlington’s path to a countywide speed management policy, which is being recommended in the forthcoming 2026 Vision Zero Action Plan Update. Learn more about next steps by viewing the Pilot Wrap-Up Document.
This spring, county crews will begin working on the Columbia Pike Bicycle Boulevards project. The Columbia Pike Bicycle Boulevards are located on neighborhood streets, where there is less traffic and automobile speeds tend to be slower. The treatments in the bicycle boulevard plans reinforce the calm characteristics of neighborhood streets to make them safer for people walking, driving, riding a bicycle or scooter.
To view the final plans and receive updates on future projects visit the Columbia Pike Bike Boulevards project page.
Join county staff on our Walk & Learn tour where county planners and engineers will discuss the recent changes completed through the Army Navy Dr Complete Streets capital project. You will get a chance to ask questions and learn more about the new multimodal transportation improvements from S Joyce St to 12th St S.

Take Bike Classes hosted by BikeArlington
Arlington County and the Washington Area Bicyclist Association (WABA) offer adult bicycle education classes to help you develop skills and confidence as a rider. Take a basic Adult Learn to Ride class or a more advanced class in which you’ll gain valuable knowledge on such topics as emergency braking, avoiding roadway hazards, proper hand signaling, scanning before turning or merging, and different ways to safely make a lefthand turn based on your comfort interacting with cars. Gaining this valuable knowledge, which goes beyond the basics of knowing how to ride, will increase your safety and confidence as you incorporate bicycling into your daily routine and use your bicycle for transportation.
