If I pass by a local bookstore, there’s a 100% chance I’m poking my head in. I can’t resist the fresh scent of a hardcover book, or thumbing through a “staff picks” shelf. Of course I’m a book nerd– I work at NPR!
Leave it to Planet Money to school me on the economics of my favorite pastime. As reporter Alexi Horowitz-Ghazi shares, there's a lot to uncover – pun intended. It turns out, landing a book deal is a lot like dating. You have your matchmakers and your suitors and it culminates in an exciting and very official (book) proposal.
Alexi is curious about the publishing industry for good reason: Planet Money is releasing its first-ever book next month! And because that team sees every business proposition as a learning opportunity, Alexi got a firsthand look at the wheelings and dealings behind today’s bestsellers.
Fun fact: Planet Money received 16 bids on their book proposal. Tune in to find out which publisher landed the deal. Rest assured, it’s a match made in heaven.
I can’t wait to finally get my hands on the finished product. I’ll see you in the stacks!
Happy Friday!
🤓Lauren
P.S. Pre-order the book before April 7, and keep an eye out for an upcoming Planet Money episode about why pre-orders are important to a book’s success!

💪Could you survive Survivor? Be honest.
The best part of competitive reality TV is getting to ruthlessly judge contestants from the comfort of your own couch. But do you have what it takes to thrive on a reality TV show? That’s the topic of debate for the hosts of Pop Culture Happy Hour.
If you’ve been following NPR’s coverage of the war with Iran, then you might already be a fan of our national security pod, Sources & Methods.

To get your invite, just sign up for NPR+ (you’ll receive a registration link ahead of the event).

When Short Wave’s Emily Kwong discovered she didn’t have an inner monologue, she did what any good journalist would do: she dug into the science. (FWIW: I’d love to turn off my inner voice every now and then…)
